Moving into a new place can feel daunting, but when you break it down bit by bit, it’s very manageable. That’s why we’ve put together this checklist, so you can focus on what really matters, which is getting settled in your new place, instead of worrying about what you’ve forgotten to pack.
Packing
If you forget some of these things, it won’t be life-stopping, but it will be a nuisance. Have a look now to make sure you’ve got them all.
Your important documents
It’s always good to have these on hand. We recommend taking photocopies and keeping them in a file, either on your laptop or in a safe in your room.
• Your tenancy agreement
• Your insurance information
• Key forms of ID, such as a driver's license and passport. Remember your spare passport photos!
• Your bank or debit card and bank account information. Make sure you have some spare change too
Your electronics
Best not to forget these either.
• Your laptop, and its charger
• While we’re at it: chargers for everything. Remember to bring an extension cord too, and an adaptor if necessary
• If you’re a fan of polaroids, film or digital shoots, don’t forget your camera
Clothes
Make sure you’ve packed your clothes thoughtfully.
• Clothes that you can wear to lectures, from shoes to warm jumpers.
• Think comfort too: a bathroom and some nice slippers will make your room feel homey.
• Be practical and pack a raincoat, an umbrella, and some wet weather shoes.
H3: Toiletries
So you won’t be rushing to the shops once you’ve arrived.
• Soap, shampoo, and conditioner
• Deodorant
• Any medical necessities you’d require. Band-aids and Panadol never go astray.
• Toothbrush, toothpaste, and lip balm
Upon arrival
You’re ready to move in? Let’s get started!
Check your inventory
Every accommodation comes with a tenancy agreement and an inventory. The inventory should outline everything included in the accommodation, from lamps to fans.
Whether it’s your first or fourth time inspecting the property, take your time and reference the inventory. While you’re at it, take some photos. It’s good to have them for your own record.
Your main necessities
There’s nothing wrong with picking up a few extra necessities. Our rooms come with full mirrors, but maybe an extra blanket or some more pillows will make it just right for you.
Decorate
When you’re finished with the necessities, consider what it’ll take to make the room cozy. You can’t go wrong with photos of friends and family or a poster of your favorite movie.
Unpack
Open that suitcase, put your clothes in that wardrobe and your bathrobe on the door hanger. Then, once you’re done, go out and explore the place: maybe you’ll make some friends!
